How useful are BCAA for athletes?

BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids) cover 3 of the essential amino acids. There are 8 essential amino acids for an adult human. These branched-chain amino acids cannot be created by our body itself. Therefore, we have to take them in through our diet, either through meat, fish or dairy products. These 3 amino acids are called leucine, isoleucine and valine. Now you are probably asking yourself why our body needs these 3 amino acids.  The answer is because our muscles are made up of about 35% of these essential amino acids. 

There are studies that show that BCAAs not only promote muscle growth but can also counteract muscle breakdown. 

After training, leucine plays a very important role. Because after training, the body needs energy again and pulls nutrients from the muscles for energy production. In this so-called catabolic phase, leucine plays a supporting role as an energy supplier. For muscle building, it is best to take about 3 g of leucine directly after training.

But BCAAs for muscle building alone does not help that much. For example, you should make sure that BCAAs are well represented in Whey Protein to add value to your muscles.
